YOU. ARE. BEAUTIFUL. INTRO

Hello. My name is Thi Linh Wernau, and I'm an artist working on a photography and film series called, YOU. ARE. BEAUTIFUL.  It's about celebrating the human spirit and beauty in our wounded veterans. (Visit my work at ThiLinh.com)

PROJECT MISSION

The number one mission of this project is to spread love and kindness - to oneself and to others - and to inspire others to do the same. In the process, I use photography and film as a way to honor the sacrifice of our veterans, empower veterans to share their own voices, and to help other veterans in need.  The artwork has been used in gallery exhibitions, community events, books and film.

PROJECT NEED

During this journey, and especially after meeting multiple combat veterans, I have learned that one must understand, "if you haven't been there, you'll never know." Transitioning back into the civilian world can be an isolating place to be, especially considering less than 1% of the population serves in the military.

Due to advancement in medicine, more military members have survived traumatic wounds and amputations versus prior wars. Outside of visible injuries, there are a host of invisible wounds, which arguably cut deeper, including post-traumatic stress, PTSD and TBI, traumatic brain injuries. There is still confusion, misconception and negative stigma surrounding the invisible wounds of war.

Still today, we lose veterans to a stateside battle - 22 veterans per day take their own lives and commit suicide.  Wounded veterans who come home are still in the fight. They find themselves facing different kind of battles and struggles in civilian life.

We can help improve the quality of life for wounded veterans. And, we can help those veterans in darkness find a way to move forward.

PLEASE HELP!

If you believe in the spirit and mission of the YOU. ARE. BEAUTIFUL. project, please donate today! I have chosen the Semper Fi Fund as one of my core charitable partners in this project because I have seen that they treat and take care of all wounded veterans, across all branches, as if they are family.

The Semper Fi Fund has also been awarded the highest rating from watch dog groups: A+ Top Rated Charity from CharityWatch. Importantly, they also maintain an extremely low overhead - 6%, while providing rapid assistance with no red tape. The needs of the wounded vets ALWAYS come first. I have heard this from firsthand accounts of the veterans I have photographed.

Please help fight for those who fought for us. Thank you for your support, and please don't forget to share this page with friends. DONATE TODAY!

With Love and Kindness,

Thi Linh

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST:

My name is Thi Linh Wernau.  (My first name is Thi Linh, and I often go by Thi, pronounced "T," for short). Veterans have always held a place close to my heart.  I am the daughter of a Vietnam vet and the sister to a Marine, my brother who has served as a Marine Corps officer for almost 20 years. My Father was an American soldier, who met my Mother in Vietnam during the later years of the war. My Mom grew up in a poor rice farming village about four hours south of Saigon.  She never owned a pair of shoes until she was 18, and she never had a toy as a child.  A few years after my Dad brought my Mom to the US, I was born in the Chicagoland area.  If it had not been for an ugly war, I would not have been given life. I cannot say I am thankful for war, but I can say that I am very grateful for my life.

I am a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and spent my professional career in the world of advertising agencies and more recently, startup mobile technology companies.  In 2012, I decided to step down from a high-powered executive career in order to pursue an unrealized dream I had delayed for 15 years.  My dream was to pursue my truth and passion in the art of photography.  I wanted to photograph people and use photography as a vehicle for voice to empower others to share their stories to impact change.

Inspired by personal experiences related to life and death in my own soul, I embarked on a journey to shoot a series called, You. Are. Beautiful.  It was inspired by the universal truth of love.  I began by photographing all different kinds of people, but in 2013, I began to focus the project soley on veterans.  I am grateful to have met so many great and inspiring people along this journey.  My experience meeting these wounded veterans and their families has reinforced my belief in following one's heart and taking the path less traveled.  For me personally, it has made all the difference.  Thank you for reading about some of my story.
