On November 26th, 2010, I was about a month and a half into my first deployment to Afghanistan in support of a mission to clear routes of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED’s). That afternoon, two of our Marines, Sgt. Gabriel Martinez and Cpl. Justin Gaertner, stepped on pressure-plate activated IED’s which resulted in both of them suffering the loss of their legs.  Since their incident both have made very speedy recoveries and have received the support they deserve from several generous charities.  The Semper Fi Fund (www.SemperFiFund.org) assisted both of these Marines when they needed it the most. This is why I have chosen to support this specific organization for my journey down the Mississippi River.

I plan to fundraise for the Semper Fi Fund during my training and participation in a kayak trip from the source of the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico.  My adventure will begin on May 31st, 2014 from Lake Itasca, MN (Source of the Mississippi River) and end approximately 2 1/2 months later at the Gulf of Mexico.  I began planning this trip in May 2013 and have made considerable progress in preparing for my trip this upcoming summer.  I hope to make a difference in a military member’s life and I need your help.  Your donations will go towards providing better support, helping defray the expenses incurred during hospitalization, rehabilitation and recovery; assist with the expenses associated with the purchase of specialized equipment, adaptive vehicles and home modifications.

The Semper Fi Fund (www.SemperFiFund.org) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that helps America's true heroes recovering from catastrophic injury.  They have been awarded the highest ratings from Watch Dog groups: A+ from Charity Watch for the second year, and they are one of only three veteran nonprofits to receive this rating the last two reports.  They’ve also received 4 stars (their highest rating) from Charity Navigator for five consecutive years.  They also maintain an extremely low overhead - 6% so more money goes directly to support injured service members and their families.  Since establishing the Semper Fi Fund in 2004, they've issued more than 67,000 grants, totaling more than $85 million in assistance to over 11,000 of our heroes and their families.  If you have the time please check out this link to see how Semper Fi Fund was there for Sgt. Gabriel Martinez and his family from the beginning. (http://semperfifund.org/hero-stories/hero-story-corporal-gabriel-martinez-usmc/) Three years later, they are still actively involved with his family

Thank you for helping to support this great cause.  Your donation will be helping me give back to our heroes who have given so much. Please visit my personal website www.MississippiRiver2014.weebly.com for more information and updates as I begin my trip. If you know of anybody else who might want to donate I would be extremely grateful if you please forward this link on to them or add this link to your Facebook page. The process is fast, easy and secure. No donation is too small!
